This Thing of Ours 2025 marked the debut solo exhibition of Jackish (Derek Lynch), the only featured artist in the event’s inaugural year. While future editions of This Thing of Ours will showcase a diverse roster of artists and creators, the first iteration centered entirely on Jackish’s work — a singular, expansive vision that fills the rooftop, the terrace, and the moment. His presence in this debut year sets the tone for the platform: intentional, immersive, and deeply personal.
Somewhere between beauty and tragedy, ecstasy and pain, and the real and the otherworldly lives the work of Jackish. A multidisciplinary visual artist, he blends the expressive nature of painting with the structural precision of sculpture, manifesting the dichotomies of life itself.
Born from mixed media reflections, his surreal reinterpretations of the everyday have evolved into more monochromatic explorations of intangible forces — energy, light, and memory. Working at a monumental scale, Jackish uses form, geometry, and texture to create sculptural pieces that shift with perspective. Shadows deepen, surfaces transform, and illuminated elements reveal hidden patterns, inviting each viewer to move, reflect, and reimagine.
Rooted in both abstraction and the figurative, his work dismantles and reassembles familiar forms into minimalist structures — offering encounters that are both poetic and disarming. Within each piece are layered critiques of inherited systems: family, gender, identity, and tradition. By disrupting the expected, Jackish asks us to reconsider our complacency and question the norms that shape our world.
